A beautiful example of a vintage tournament-sized, hand-made board by Hector Saxe, Paris. Hector Saxe is one of the finest backgammon makers in the world and they are the official supplier to the annual World Backgammon Championships in Monaco, and the French Backgammon Association. Hector Saxe boards are still hand-made in their 'atelier' in the Bastille 'quartier' in the centre of Paris. This one was probably made in the late 1900s - and is in very fine condition. It is rare to find true vintage Hector Saxe boards. This is a wooden-framed game, covered in rich, embossed, black simili-leather (I had to use a magnifying glass to tell it from leather, and I'm still not sure) both inside and out, and with a green baize playing surface and the classic red and black 'points'. The corners of the board are protected by steel corner pieces, which is a hallmark of the finer Hector Saxe boards. This is an exceptionally beautiful backgammon game, hand-made by one of the great names, known world-wide for their quality of workmanship and materials, as well as their celebrity clientèle. The red and grey pearlised acrylic playing pieces measure 45mm (1 3/4") in diameter and slide seamlessly across the playing surface. This game would be equally appropriate as an elegant tournament game for a backgammon enthousiast - or just a beautiful board for the home. The game is complete with its original dice, dice cups and doubling cube. It also has both keys, which is extremely rare as well as its Hector Saxe brushed cotton transport cover. Dimensions (board open) : 52cms (20 1/2") X 74cms (29"). The game is in excellent condition with almost no signs of use. The catches and hinges are in perfect working order.
Since I started restoring antique and vintage backgammon boards during the Covid lockdown in 2020 I’ve sold over 500 of my games to connoisseurs in South Africa, Sweden, Scotland, the Balearic Islands, Canada, Australia, Holland, Germany, Belgium, Monaco, England, Ireland, Portugal, Switzerland, Spain, Italy, and of course my home-country, France ... but also in New York, Arizona, Georgia, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Alabama, Virginia, Colorado, Tennessee, Washington state, New Hampshire, Idaho, Wyoming, Texas, Pennsylvania, Indiana, North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida, California, Oregon, Maine, New Jersey, Michigan, Illinois, Ohio, Wisconsin, Maryland, Georgia, Alaska and Puerto Rico. My clients include minor European royalty, national and international backgammon champions, people who can’t play backgammon, British, Austrian, Italian and French aristocracy … and an awful lot of people who just love to play backgammon on these beautiful, historically-charged boards. In addition to the 100 or so 5-star reviews here on Etsy I will happily provide written, and verifiable, references from some of my private clients if you so wish.
NOTA : I usually have a variety of vintage instruction / rules booklets, for backgammon and jacquet, in both French and English - please ask if you would like me to include one with your game. DELIVERY : Please note that within France, Belgium, Spain and some other European countries my shipper normally delivers to a 'collection point' (Relay Point) close to your home. For other EU countries and the rest of the world, the norm is home delivery. I can offer expedited delivery via UPS to most destinations. If you don't see this option please message me and I'll get you a rapid quote. INSURANCE : Please note that I do not automatically insure my boards for shipping above the 50€ minimum international cover. My shipper is highly reliable and I very rarely have issues, but accidents can always happen. If you would like me to insure your purchase to its full value there will be a small charge. Please let me know by message and I will set this up.
